How Cannon-Tested Spin Durability works×

The test. A ball cannon fires LT Pro 48 balls at 60 MPH and a high-speed camera (2,032 frames per second) reads the spin off the ball. The paddle then takes 100 impacts at 70 MPH to simulate wear, and the 10-shot test is repeated. Cannon Spin Retention is the percent change in spin from New to After 100 Impacts, with a 95% confidence interval from a Welch t test.

The four results describe what happened. They are not a ranking.

• ✓ Holds loss under 12%
• ▾ Moderate loss loss from 12% up to 20%
• ▾▾ Heavy loss loss of 20% or more
• ▴ Measurable gain the 95% interval sits entirely above zero. A gain has to clear a significance test to be named, while a loss only has to clear a threshold.

Confidence is band containment: high means the whole 95% interval falls inside one result, medium means it spans two, low means it spans all three, and not rated means no per-shot data exists to form an interval. It describes how firmly the paddle sits in its result. It is not a quality score.

Why not tiers. The earlier tiers read too much like a league table, and gained widespread use with perceived meanings beyond what my original tiers were intended. This replaces the tiers with plain descriptions of the cannon results, and keeps the percentage and confidence intervals front and center.

Limits. Cannon RPM, shown here for context, cannot be compared to human-generated spin. Counts of shots used (n) are shown on every row; rows with few shots have wide intervals and low confidence.
